Behavior Supports are specialized services provided by the Pennsylvania Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) designed to assist individuals with developmental disabilities in achieving and maintaining positive behavioral outcomes. These services aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals by promoting adaptive behaviors, reducing challenging behaviors, and fostering a supportive environment for both individuals and their caregivers.

  • To understand and address the unique behavioral needs of individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • To develop and implement individualized behavior support plans.
  • To provide training and support to caregivers and support staff.
  • To enhance the individual’s ability to participate in community activities and achieve personal goals.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Comprehensive assessment of the individual’s behavior, including identifying the functions of challenging behaviors.
  • Use of standardized assessment tools and techniques to gather relevant data.
  • Collaboration with the individual, their family, and support team to understand the individual’s history, preferences, and goals.

Behavior Support Plan Development

  • Creation of a tailored Behavior Support Plan (BSP) based on the assessment findings.
  • Identification of specific, measurable behavioral goals.
  • Strategies and interventions to promote positive behaviors and reduce or eliminate challenging behaviors.
  • Consideration of the least restrictive interventions that ensure safety and dignity.

Implementation and Monitoring

  • Training and guidance for caregivers and support staff on implementing the BSP.
  • Ongoing support and consultation to ensure fidelity to the BSP.
  • Regular monitoring and data collection to track progress and make necessary adjustments.
  • Crisis intervention support as needed to manage immediate behavioral challenges.

Training and Education

  • Providing education on behavioral principles and techniques to individuals, families, and support staff.
  • Workshops and training sessions to build skills in positive behavior support, communication strategies, and effective intervention techniques.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Working closely with other service providers, educational institutions, and healthcare professionals to ensure a holistic approach to behavioral support.
  • Facilitating interdisciplinary team meetings to review progress and update the BSP as needed.

Outcome Measurement and Reporting

  • Systematic collection and analysis of data to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Regular reporting to stakeholders on the individual’s progress and any adjustments to the BSP.
  • Use of outcome data to inform best practices and continuous improvement in service delivery.
